Call him the Professor; call him the Gambler, but whatever you prefer feel free to call Kenny Rogers a nine game winner. I think it is also safe to call him a great free agent signing in the off-season for Dave Dombrowski. Rogers was brilliant over eight innings only giving up a single run to the Rays. He only allowed four hits while striking out nine batters. The biggest difference Rogers makes for the Tigers is his veteran influence on the young Detroit pitching staff. On days he is not pitching you will always find Rogers surrounded by the other pitchers who are not starting. His mentoring and lessons must be rubbing off on the staff with the lowest ERA in all of baseball. Jason Grilli and the Tigers offense finished off the game for Rogers. Grilli pitched a perfect ninth to lower his ERA to 4.22. Detroit scored a run in the second inning on an Alexis Gomez single driving in Guillen, who reached on an error. In the fifth the Tigers offense went off for six runs that proved to be the difference. Pudge singled in a run as did Gomez and Brandon Inge. Carlos Guillen hit a double that scored two runs. Curtis Granderson added a sac fly for the final run. Following a tough stretch the Tigers have rebounded nicely to win four games in a row. *** OEs 3 Stars of the Game *** #3 Alexis Gomez – 2-4 with a run scored and 2 RBI #2 Carlos Guillen – 1-4 with two runs scored and 2 RBI #1 Kenny Rogers – Win (9), 8 IP, 4 Hs, 1 R, 1 BB, 9 Ks, 3.25 ERA On Tap – Game 66 (42-23) v.
