Ouch! That was the worst inning the Tigers have had all year. The horrible seventh inning turned a tie game into a Pittsburgh blowout and a rare Detroit loss. The game was 2-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh when all hell broke loose for the Tigers. They looked more like the 119 loss team of a few years ago than the team with the best record in baseball. However, it was only one inning and one game. Granted Detroit did commit three straight errors in the seventh leading to seven Pirate runs and an end to the Tigers winning streak.

Defense and sloppy play let the Tigers down in this stinker. They had four errors on the game with two from Planco, one from Inge and another for Shelton. Things started well for the Tigers as Bonderman gave up two runs in five innings. He gave up seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts. However, Bonderman was pulled after five innings because of tightness in his stomach. The bullpen did not come through on this occasion. Jason Grilli took his first loss giving up two run, one earned in 1.1 innings. Wil Ledezma and Fernando Rodney both failed to record an out while combining to give up five runs…none of them earned!!! Of the Pirates 9 runs in the game only 3 of them were earned. Jamie Walker finally stopped the bleeding over the last 1.2 innings.

The Tigers offense did not put up many runs against the Pirates pitchers. Shelton hit an RBI single in the second inning against the team that did not protect him in the rule five draft. The only other run came on a sac fly by Carlos Guillen. This is a game to quickly forget about and go out the next day to start a new winning streak.

*** OEs 3 Stars of the Game ***

#3 Chris Shelton – 1-3 with a BB and a RBI
#2 Carlos Guillen – 1-2 with a run scored, a BB and a RBI
#1 Jeremy Bonderman – 5 IP, 7 Hs, 2 Rs, 1 BB, 5 Ks, 3.65 ERA

On Tap – Game 82 (55-26) @ Pittsburgh Pirates (28-54) July 2nd, 1:35 ET
Zach Minor (4-1, 2.59) v. Ian Snell (7-5, 4.87)
