I'm listening to the Dodger broadcast right now, and it is Charlie Steiner. I haven't paid much attention really to who the Dodgers were replacing Ross Porter with because, frankly, I'm still very bitter and pissed off that Porter's contract was not renewed.

As I didn't hear the news, I started wondering -- this morning -- if the Dodgers were perhaps trying out new guys for the job during Spring Training (must like the Lakers did when Chick Hearn passed away).

Make that: I was really hoping they were trying out guys because -- to be blunt -- Charlie Steiner just isn't that good.

Maybe I'm just being hard on Charlie. He has HUGE shoes to fill. I wonder if I would like ANYBODY else.

I can forgive the Dodgers for letting Beltre and Green go. I'm having a hard time forgiving them for this.

You know, I'd always enjoyed Steiner's commentary on ESPN, and I assumed he'd made a decent broadcaster because I guess he was doing work in New York beforehand (I say this because he accidentally referred to the Dodgers as the Yankees during the first Spring Training broadcast this year). But I've really got to agree with Reedster here. He's incredibly bland, and I think that even if you were a Dodger fan who never liked Ross, you'd at the very least appreciate the familiarity of his voice over Steiner's droning. In Steiner's defense, I've never spent much time listening to Spring Training broadcasts before, and perhaps, like the players themselves, a broadcaster coming to a new team has to warm up for the season AND adjust to the newness of everything. Here's hoping that by the time the Dodgers are well on their way to a 2005 World Series championship, Steiner will have hit his stride.

Steiner has a no-win situation. He could be the second coming of Vin Scully and all people will remember is he's they guy they fired Ross for.
Personally, I like Steiner and think he translates his love of the game well to the mike. In fact, I find that Rick Monday works well on color with him.
Was he worth firing Ross?

Welcome to the McCourt/Depodesta Dodgers....
It's not much different than firing Beltre for J.D. Drew.

That said, was Ross the best announcer you ever heard not named Vin? How many of us joked about Ross illiterations of the number two and the way he pronounced league.. Not to mention the fact he never met a stat he didn't like.
Let's say the Dodgers of now handled the departure of Ross like the O'Malley era handled the departure of Jerry Doggett. What if they had told Ross to his face it was time for a new direction, instead of telling him in the third paragraph of a press release. What if they had allowed Ross to say farewell to the audience during a ballgame and on a postgame Dodgertalk, instead of on a rival radio station after he is stunned by the news.

I can bet that if that scenario had taken place, the audience would warm much more to Steiner and give him a fair shake. But unfortunatly, there doesn't seem to be much class around the Dodgers anymore.

Ok I know this is a late reply...but I had to thrown my 2 cents in...here it goes...Charlie sucks, and he sucks bad. Is it me or does he sound loaded? Charlie may know the game and love the game, but he sure cant call the game...but kudos for him trying..lets trade him to the Giants for one of those rubber chickens..."sorry Charlie"

As much as I don't like Charlie Steiner, I actually understand the decision better after talking to the person whose job it was to remove Ross Porter. First, Porter was not reporting the games as they happened. I was told that he was too busy reading his notes on players to even watch what was going on. There was times where he would miss plays all together and make up what happened. Secondly, he was becoming difficult around the radio both. I hated to see him go but I do understand why he was removed. Also, I am not a fan of McCourt but he had no say in the matter it was a radio only decision.

Thanks for that inside look... I didn't think about this possibiity. Still, I loved Ross... even if he was making stuff up.

As for Steiner, I have come to appreciate him a bit more.

He has that style that seems to be very southern-like -- to me -- like he's rocking on a porch in Alabama, drinking a mojito, and watching the ballgame.

Not bad. But, not Ross, either.

I used to not like listening to Ross Porter, thinking like many that he spent too much time spewing out stats. But, I grew to like his style, his strange accent, and his reliability. He was as much a voice of the Dodgers as is Vin. You heard Ross' voice and you knew it was Dodger time. I enjoyed Drysdale's broadcasts too, and remember how he used to always talk about brushing the batters back with the inside heat.

I still listen to many of the radio broadcasts online now, and miss Ross. Having a pair of announcers calling a Dodger game is still strange to me.
